TFP Column: The Scavengers Are Circling

The latest edition of the Toledo Free Press has once again hit the presses, and once more a contribution of mine is a part of it. As I have talked about before, this one was a bit of a stretch as a writer for me, and I have to admit to being rather happy with my effort this week.

I also have to admit however, that I was more fascinated with Jim Harpen's column on the political party growing in Toledo as a result of the Tea Party movement than I was with my own effort. Maggie Thurber likewise puts forward a more interesting effort than mine discussing the current penchant of government to ignore the concept of a contract (and perhaps by extension, property). In addition the publisher of the Free Press, Tom Pounds, discusses the potential repercussions of a bailout of the newspaper industry, a piece that I read with great interest since the subject is near and dear to my heart.

And what would a Mother's Day edition without something about Mom. Heather Miller has done a truly admirable job this year that is well worth the read. As for Editor in Chief Michael Miller's contribution, I will simply smile and let it speak for itself, as my poor words would be little more than wasted effort.

In other words, there is once again a ton of stuff in this weekend's TFP more worthy than my poor efforts. The weather this weekend in Toledo looks to be marginal at best, so I recommend curling up with the Free Press for a couple of hours. It will be well worth the time.

Tim,

Odd that you should mention it, seeing as I have "clipped & saved" (for later review) only 3 articles from the daily loco (allegedly, once a formerly great [their characterization, not mine] newspaper, but I have similarly saved 6 from "The Freep."

(Thinking to myself that "the giant" had better start keeping an eye on David.)

My, how things are changing...

:-)

HT,

I am with you my friend. I find myself constantly amazed and humbled to be included in this talented group of people.

Given the financial situation, I'll give you a penny for your (real) thoughts. harrumph.

In regards to the current world economic situation (because I see it as more than just Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, and the U.S.A.), I believe many folks just love to point fingers at everyone else except their own little greedy selves while they themselves become the vulture predators.

I say let's go back to gold coins that are actually worth something. American currency doesn't seem worth the paper on which it is printed.

Our children's children's children's children are going to pay the price.

Great article Tim!! At times it feels like yelling in the wilderness...no one seems to be listening...

Just an aside: I've been at my job for 24+ years, and I am having the roughest financial patch I've EVER been through the last couple of years. By comparison, I have an acquaintance who is so happy because his brother is "now finally able" to get his life together after serving his time from robbing banks, because not only is he getting his well-deserved welfare benefits, he is also finally getting a huge chunk of money (thousands) from SSDI, retro to when he applied... paints quite a picture, doesn't it?

Roland,

I agree with your assessment of the economic situation, so the penny (not worth anything anyway) is not required. I too miss the good old days of the "Gold Standard".

WT,

Thank you maam. I just wish more people got it. Maybe if we keep rubbing people noses in the offal, more will.

The illustration of your friend is typical, as we all complain about govt. benefits until the case hits closer to home.
